Drilling Engineer Technical Advisor

Position Summary

This position is a consultant or contractor role. The successful candidate must be a senior expert in drilling engineering and will be responsible for developing and researching new techniques and approaches related to drilling and recovery processes. The individual will provide technical guidance on the most complex drilling engineering projects in the Eagleford trend, including very deep, hot, and complex deposits. This position is responsible for designing drilling well plans, generating cost estimates and AFEs, coordinating permitting, and supporting drilling operations day to day in order to safely and cost effectively drill budgeted wells. The position recommends solutions to challenges that arise during drilling and develops subsequent plans to address resulting project scope changes.  This position optimizes casing designs, plans drill string and bit requirements, optimizes hydraulics programs, and indicates required drilling rig specifications. The position gives drilling support to the asset teams so as to optimize the development of producing fields.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform the following satisfactorily; other duties may be assigned.

  • Review company drilling practices with respect to industry standards and trends; develop and recommend changes to company standards, procedures, and practices.
  • Monitor ongoing drilling operations and assist with troubleshooting drilling-related problems and development of cost-effective solutions.
  • Provide engineering consultation to other drilling and asset team members on well design and planning.
  • Participate in peer reviews and end-of-well close-out meetings (postmortems), ensuring that lessons learned are captured.
  • An ongoing review of available drilling software makes recommendations on application and utilization.
  • Coordinate development of companywide non-productive time review to aid in ascertaining focus for continuous improvement.
  • Stay current with the latest technology developments with respect to drilling engineering, applications, and operations so as to apply appropriately to the Verdun assets.
  • Other duties as assigned by the manager.

Qualifications & Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and ability required.

Education/Experience

Bachelor’s degree in engineering or equivalent experience.

15+ years of experience in drilling operations

Experience with difficult deep and hot wells in the Eagleford Shale trend.

Computer Skills

Full knowledge of MS Office Suite.

Familiar with common drilling database and rig activity recording software

Other Skills

Expert knowledge of drilling fluids, well control, casing, and cementing

Expert knowledge of fishing operations and directional drilling.

Ability to stay current with new and emerging technologies
